How web hosting directories can help you?

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

What is a webhosting directory? It is a similar directory just like your normal telephone directory with Yellow Pages. Many beginners and newbies who are in search of a reliable web host come across web hosting directories while searching for webhosts on search engines like Google.
But a question that can be of concern is: Are these web hosting directories really trustworthy sources for novices and newbies?
To find an answer it’s very important to understand the working of webhost directories (WHDs).

Web-hosting directories are of two types: paid WHDs and free WHDs. For paid directories, either web hosts pay a set amount for placing their banners on the site, or they pay commission if they get customers via that medium. An example of such type of directory is www.thewhir.com

On the other hand, free WHDs like www.thehostdir.com and www.hostbyte.com etc. web hosts list their services without paying any fees.

Some people believe that paid WHDs are very easy to manipulate as the ranking of web hosts can be changed in unfair ways. Others have the view that WHDs that are actually free reflect the true ranking of web hosts companies. Whatever the case may be, paid or free, people should believe the web hosts rankings only if they are based completely on votes of customers who have actually given their remarks and have left their website address as well.

It is not possible for any web hosting company to have 100% positive reviews. It is also observed that at times customers who are satisfied with their web host forget to express their opinion about that host. However, a biased customer who is not satisfied with their web host does not forget to mention their opinion of that web host. This implies that a negative review doesn’t always reflect the true picture of a web host company.

No doubt web hosting directories are very useful if the newbies wish to compare prices and features of different companies. But, when it comes to choosing a web host he/she should make an intelligent choice by referring to other resource sites (forums etc.) as well.

Reviews on forums can be good tool to judge on choosing a webhost after one has shortlisted the hosting providers from web-host directories. Forums may contain good or bad reviews, but both can be helpful to find the reputation of that particular hosting company.

Decide which webhosting you need?

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

When you decide to have a hosting account, the first question is to decide which webhosting type you need to go with?

Technology has introduced various platforms for webhosting. They can be catagorised as follows :

Shared hosting
Reseller hosting
Semi-dedicated hosting
VPS hosting
Dedicated hosting
etc..

It is crucial to understand the differences among the types of hosting offered. As the Web hosting industry has matured, hosting offers have split into a few distinct categories, each with strengths and weaknesses.

* Shared hosting (sometimes called virtual hosting) means that you are sharing a server with other clients of that company. The host manages the server almost completely (though you maintain your site and your account). They can afford to charge you little since many clients are paying for use of the server.

However, companies other than yours use the resources of that server. That means heavy traffic to one of the other sites on the server can hammer the performance of your site. Also, you typically are unable to install special software programs on these types of machines because the host will need to keep a stable environment for all of the clients using the server.

Offering gigs of disk space with tons of gigs of bandwidth that too at a very cheap rate, is possible only with Shared hosting as resources are shared on a single server amongst hundreds and thousands of users.

* Reseller hosting enables you to resell the shared hosting to your end user clients. Here, the original hosting provider stays anonymous and to your end user clients you appear to be the primary hosting provider. This is good for those people who wish to start a hosting business. Later as your client number increases, the option to switch to VPS or Dedicated server hosting is preferred.

* Semi-dedicated hosting is similar to shared hosting, but here the number of users on a particular server is very less and limited as compared to the overfilled shared hosting servers. This is good for people who cannot afford dedicated hosting but still do not wish to face the cons of shared hosting.

* VPS hosting also known as Virtual Private Server, is an intermediate hosting between shared and dedicated hosting. VPS hosting servers are the small servers that are hosted on a main VPS server. VPS work on logically sharing of resources such as Memory (RAM), CPU, Disk Space, Bandwidth etc. VPS hosting is ideal for low resource consuming websites. The most attractive feature of VPS hosting is that you get root access to the server as if it was your dedicated server. You can install and run applications on your own (provided you do not run out of resources).

* Dedicated hosting can further be classifed into colocation, unmanaged and managed dedicated hosting.

* Co-located hosting means that you buy a server from a hardware vendor, like Dell or HP, and you supply this server to the host. The Web host plugs your server into its network and its redundant power systems. The host is responsible for ensuring its network is available, and you are responsible for support and maintenance of your server.

Good hosts offer management contracts to their co-location clients so that you can outsource much of the support to them and come to an arrangement similar to managed dedicated hosting. Most co-location hosts do not offer this service, however.

* Unmanaged dedicated hosting is similar to co-location except that you lease a server from a host and do not own it yourself. Some very limited support (typically Web-based only) is included, but the level of support varies widely among unmanaged dedicated hosts.

These days unmanaged dedicated hosting start from $69 per month. Support levels typically are provided only in general terms. Ask the host to go into specifics about what support it will provide — will it apply security patches to your server? — before signing up. This service is typically good for gaming servers (like Doom or Counterstrike servers) or hobbyist servers, but not for serious businesses that need responsive, expert-level service.

* Managed dedicated hosting means leasing a server from a host and having that company provide a robust level of support and maintenance on the server that is backed by quality guarantees. This maintenance typically includes services such as server uptime monitoring, a hardware warranty and security patch updates.

Ensure that your managed dedicated host is specific about its managed services so that it does not disguise an unmanaged dedicated offering as a managed dedicated server. This has been known to happen, which is why it is important to do your homework and ask the right questions.

We at http://www.rshosting.com offer UK and US based Reseller hosting, VPS Hosting, Semidedicated hosting, dedicated hosting (with fully managed servers).

How to earn with Google AdSense program

Friday, April 13th, 2007

As a website owner you would definitely think of getting some additional revenue from it. Your site is doing well for your products, now you want to have some extra earning from it. How to achieve this ?
Google AdSence can be the answer for your question.

An advertiser sign up with Google for AdWords system and creates one or more advertisements that they want to pay to have appear either on Google’s search result pages or on “content pages”. Those content pages are Web sites run by individuals and organizations that include AdSense.
Here advertisers don’t have to pay for their adverts show up on either Google or separate content sites, but instead pay when the ads are clicked by customers, what we call “pay per click” or PPC. A percentage of the amount that the company pays Google for displaying the ad is then shared with the AdSense-enabled web site owner.
Suppose an advertiser is wiling to pays $1.00 for a visitor to their through AdWords, then Google will pay you certain amount (certain percentage : Google haven’t specified it yet ).

Signing up Google AdSense can be considered as an fast an easy way to earn money by displaying relevant Google ads on your site.
All displayed ads are related to what your visitors are looking for on your site — or matched to the characteristics and interests of the visitors your content attracts — you’ll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages and will earn if they click on them. For getting a good income your site must have a huge traffic and your visitors should clicks on these adverts.
You have choice for locating these adverts within your page by placing special AdSense code into your page, you can also specify color and sizes also for ads.
It is the simple way for earning without negotiating with your advertisers, no more bills for anyone and no headache for payments.

Not every site is approved for AdSense program. Google has their own terms and condition.

Migrating to new host

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

For some reasons, you decided to move your site at new host.

Before moving to new host , plan your migration properly otherwise you may end up in a mess.
When you migrate to new host you get new DNS, new IP and new content ( if you manage for it )

Now you may think that you have migrated so why to keep any data at old server so you may put blank pages over there, keeping the old server still live.
This is most worst mistake which is usually done by webmasters which causes their new migrated site to get banned even though there is nothing wrong in it.

The reason for this is :
Since old server is still live, some Googlebots were using the old DNS/old IP and went to old serever and they received a blank page there, other Googlebots were going to new server they were using new DNS, new IP, new Contents. Due to this Google was getting two different pages at same time hence it consider it as an ” Cloaking ” and you are banned for such mistake.

How to avoid this :
*) Bring a copy of your site up at the new IP address.

*) Update your nameserver to point to the new IP address.

*) Once you see search engine spiders fetch pages from the new IP address, then be sure to take down the copy of your site at the old IP address.

*) Do not do all of the changes at the same time.

*) Make sure there are never two servers responding to requests for your domain dishing out different content.

Fantastico icon not present in cpanel.

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

If fantastico is installed on the server, but the fantastico icon is not present in cpanel then you will have to check 3 things on the server as,
1) Make it sure that Option fantastico is CHECKED in the feature list assigned to that account.

In order to check this, you will have to login into the root WHM and select the option called Packages >> Feature Manager and edit the feature list that is assigned to that account.
You can check which feature list is assigned to the account from edit package option in whm.
2) First check the theme that cpanel is using.

And after that please check the symbolic link to the fantastico directory is present or not.
In order to create the symbolic link, run the following command say for theme bluelagoon as
– ln -s /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/fantastico
/usr/local/cpanel/base/frontend/bluelagoon
3) Please check the cpanel version and If you are running cpanel version called CPANEL 10.4.0C150 or next and icon is not present in cpanel’s own themes like x, x2,xmail etc, then run the command as a root via SSH

—————-

mv /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/fantastico/xskin.html
/usr/local/cpanel/base/frontend/x/cells/fantastico.html
